Mono and/or Colored? Entangled at St. Georges-sur-L’Aa
One of the first questions I had buying my first digital DSLR was ‘how do I shoot monochrome photos from now?’. In the past it was just choosing what film I put in a camera. Going digital implied using editing to revert from color to monochrome. More recently black and white modes came back on devices. Not only on iPhone. My choice for Nikon Zf was influenced by it. But it all is a question of taste.
Two photos of the power lines at St. George-sur-L’Aa in France. Pick one or both. Both were shot on iPhone without the mono setting.
Every time we travel to or from the UK via the Channel Tunnel, I try to take photos of these steel giants. They carry power lines in the area of St. George-sur-l’Aa. No worries, I’m in the passenger seat.

Always a valid question when deciding on the way forward with largely monochrome images – a matter of personal taste of the artist (and perhaps the time of day) . I’m not sure comparison between two graphically different images would be my way forward – certainly an option for comparing two variants of the same image, however.

Using monochrome as a way of presenting is for me not linked to comparison. I used to shoot only monochrome for years before digital. In these two photos the subject is central. But I understand your point of view! In the end it is about my own interpretation and then how it is perceived. Both are subjective.

I prefer the color because there’s less structure in the sky

…and the color composition has a nice sense of vanishing point perspective in the wires

In the mono I pushed the pylons more into view.
