A Long Shot

A slightly different shot than yesterday. With a bit more of the atmosphere of the canal itself.

The Netherlands has its fair share of water (canals, lakes, ponds) and a fair share of bridges and even aquaducts. LAPC #413 is ‘bridges’. The two overlapping bridges (behind the front one is a motorway bridge) are not my favourites as the brief of LAPC asks for. They are the most practical in daily life to cross the canal. In the Archive bridges you find more photos of bridges. Most of them are from ordinary daily life close to home. But two of my favourites are the Millennium Bridge in London and the Pont de Normandie in Normandy.

Masked Bridge

The Netherlands has its fair share of water (canals, lakes, ponds) and a fair share of bridges and even aquaducts. LAPC #413 is ‘bridges’. Bridged

The Netherlands has its fair share of water (canals, lakes, ponds) and a fair share of bridges and even aquaducts. LAPC #413 is ‘bridges’. This two bridges (overlapping) are not my favorites, but with the bridge this one is taken from, the most common I see every day.

Haarlem Station

Mono and/or colour? Zandvoort Beach

The beach at Zandvoort. The west coast of The Netherlands is one big sand beach. Choosing for mono or colour is a choice for atmosphere. But also a way to get more attention to certain parts of the frame. Silhouettes in black in mono work stronger than in colour for me. But in the end, it is a matter of taste of course.

Mono and/or coloured? Before Take off, Schiphol

Waiting for boarding can be boring, but sometimes there is an opportunity for a nice photo. And again, a tough choice, pick your favourite. LAPC #412 is ‘places shaped by water’. The airport Schiphol is located in what used to be a lake till the mid 1800 century.

Mono and/or Colour? Dutch Polder Landscape

A polder landscape. Living below sea level water management is needed to keep us dry. Here you see a typical polder landscape.
LAPC #412 is ‘places shaped by water’.

Mono and/or Coloured? Volkerakdam

One of the first questions I had buying my first digital DSLR was ‘how do I shoot monochrome photos from now?’. In the past it was just choosing what film I put in a camera. Going digital implied using editing to revert from color to monochrome. More recently black and white modes came back on devices. Not only on iPhone. My choice for Nikon Zf was influenced by it. But it all is a question of taste. And taste is specific. When I see a subject nowadays I try to use the monochrome settings and the standard colour settings; knowing that I can nowadays see the results straight away. That is a blessing.

Two different photos of the road over the Volkerakdam. This dam and the locks in it, are part of the Delta Works, safeguarding The Netherlands against floods.

LAPC #412 is ‘places shaped by water’. I think that applies exactly to the existence of The Netherlands.

Nobody Can Wait Forever

Mono and/or Colored? Entangled at St. Georges-sur-L’Aa

One of the first questions I had buying my first digital DSLR was ‘how do I shoot monochrome photos from now?’. In the past it was just choosing what film I put in a camera. Going digital implied using editing to revert from color to monochrome. More recently black and white modes came back on devices. Not only on iPhone. My choice for Nikon Zf was influenced by it. But it all is a question of taste.

Every time we travel to or from the UK via the Channel Tunnel, I try to take photos of these steel giants. They carry power lines in the area of St. George-sur-l’Aa. No worries, I’m in the passenger seat.

Sky Stripes

LAPC #408 is ‘over the top’. The sky at dusk, showing what we call ‘schapenwolken’ in Dutch. Literally over the top. In case you can not sleep, counting them would help. But where do they go after you counted them?

LAPC #403 focuses on photography tools: perspective, depth and scale. Normally it is better to cut the flower off after it has died, to keep the food in the bulb for next year. But an Allium turns into something quite spectacular.

A major part of The Netherlands lies beneath sea level. Water, and the management of it in infrastructure as polders, dams and canals, is normal. We even not think of living under sea level. We feel safe. 
The flat landscape makes it interesting to look for lines that guide the eyes through the space. In a polder there are always canals that do the trick.

The question here is: which appeals most to your taste buds?

LAPC #395 looks back to LAPC #155 ‘On the water’. Water is not on our minds, but it is mindful to keep defending dry land against rising sea, rivers and soon (thanks to climate change with a bigger financial effort) rain. Meanwhile water is seen in most of the landscapes of The Netherlands.

A matter of taste and choice – episode 8

The garden comes back to green and colors. This tree was a new addition and looked quite poorly but is recovering day by day.

This week’s theme #390 is ‘color in black and white’. The theme focuses on the cognitive fact that our brains still know a color, even if it is in a grey tone. So the sky is blue, the grass green etc. Here you can see what colors do in greys, and if that is appealing or not to your taste pallet. For me this challenge is a bit of fun: most of the time I am looking at the world translating colors straight into grey tones, seeing if a photo is working in monochrome or not. Thanks Egidio for this challenge.

Grey Tones With Some Black

Well, it is not a box, but the association with the name is quite powerful. This ‘box’ holds only sparkly things, instead of the mythological one. I published the color version a week ago. Westfield in Leidschendam, Mall of The Netherlands.

When I started this hobby, mono was fashionable and a standard for news photography. And it was cheaper. In this series I offer you two versions of a photo. And you can prefer one over the other, or not.

A Sunday Walk

Spring is here and last weekend I made a little bicycle ride to check out the bulb flower fields. Daffodils where coming up, and at odd places hyacinths started to show. A nice way to relax and enjoy the lovely day outside. As did others by walking, running or cycling. Fitting this week’s theme ‘Time to relax’.
