The front of the Reichstag. A visit was on the top of my list. In 1989 the Berlin Wall was right next to the building; and since 1989 this area was completely developed. So we booked a visit to the dome. On this photo I left the dome out consciously. I wanted to have an image like the building looked in November 1989 below.

The history of the Reichstag is connected to my hometown and Leiden. In 1933 Marinus van der Lubbe was accused, tried and sentenced by the Nazi-regime for setting fire to the building. He was born in Leiden en lived in Oegstgeest, as did his family.

This week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #361 is ‘Doors revisited’. That theme was also the brief for LAPC #20. A door is a pass way to another space behind it. That space can be something we know already. Or something we like to imagine to see there when we go through. And in books you can end up in another world. In this post a few doors I met in my life. One I used for a long time, most I just passed by or passed through on holidays.
The word ‘doors’ for me is also linked to the band The Doors. The name of the band came from a book by Aldous Huxley, The doors of perception. And Huxley took it from William Blake, who used it as a metaphor:
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro’ narrow chinks of his cavern . Doors lead you to another side or space, break on through to the other side.”
So a lot can be said about doors. Luckily, we still have the photos. Here are a few from my conscious memory.
The Netherlands, Oegstgeest – November 1991
This is the front door to the house I was born and lived in for 25 years. The photo is shot on Ilford XP with a Pentax K1000.
France, Caylus – September 2005

Greece, Karpathos – September 2009
I looked through my archive. It struck me that lots of the doors I saw there are doors of small or bigger churches. This one is on Karpathos. Shot on Nikon D70.
LAPC 309 is about balconies. I have to admit that I do not pay special attention to balconies, unless they trigger me as I look around and they catch my eye. I do however ‘collect’ French windows. So occasionally they pop up in a frame. This is one of those, in one of my favourite cities, Paris. From the analogue archive of December 1993.

Travel has taught me to be bold and kind to try and make contact and produce the photos you really want. But sometimes you have to pay money as well. A family portrait on high altitude (5000 meters) in the Himalay on Karo La. Part of a family that lived on the pass, with a yak, a goat and dogs. La Défense is a big, modern office area in Paris. I remember my teacher for French saying she did not like it at all, too modern, on the old axe of the Champs Elysées and Louvre. Years later I was curious about the area and went there on a long weekend trip, hoping for some nice images. Feeling small between the buildings of big companies, rising high up over the skyline of Paris. An alienating place, where human size did not seem to matter.

In March 2004 I visited Tibet. It would be an understatement if I said it was just overwhelming. The backdrop of the Himalayas. The fact that we were ‘high’: most of the time 3500 meters over sea level, my normal level of living. The people and their close contact with religion, Buddhism. All parts of a puzzle that hopefully will bring me back there one day.

In times of covid things change, some in small ways, some in quite ‘big’ ways. The world is not getting smaller but seems smaller. Going away for a long weekend is more like a logistical planned event than a spontaneous ‘let’s get away’. And even the way I take photo’s is changed. I see less that catches my eye, all is so familiar close by. So I went way back till way then, October 1990, a long weekend with old school mates. The mates are still there, on Whatsapp. But the feeling of this image is different. A swarm of birds against a sunset. Being free, to wander, to roam. Patience my dear heart.
