Sepia over Den Haag
The Lens-artists challenge #197 is ‘rule of thirds’. The rule of thirds is a rule of thumb how to compose images. But a photo that creates a journey of the eye can also be made by using lines and colors. This is the view from Den Haag Central Station to Scheveningen.

Musée Carré d’Art 1997
This week lens artists photo challenge is ‘that special place’. In this photo it refers to the moment of the photo. I was lying on the floor figuring out if the reflections of the Musée Carré d’Art could build up to some composition. Then, a young girls came into the frame, and I just snapped.

Kathmandu 2004
This weeks challenge #186 is ‘Low Light’. In black and white light is key for tones in the picture. It needs body (black) but soft greys give it atmosphere. Here I used the darker tones for the main objects of the photo, the couple playing cards, while having a drink and a bite. But all these signs in the background about what to do in Kathmandu add to the atmosphere of the photo.

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa
Mona Lisa is one of the most famous and genius works of art in the world. I was lucky to view it for the first time when the Louvre was not modernized. On a Monday morning in February 1984 me and a friend were the only persons in the room to admire her mysterious smile. In 2008 I saw her again from a distance, in a sea of pressing people, holding up phones and camera’s to get a glimpse of her. I have not been there since, but I can imagine what it must look like on a normal day before the pandemic. A wave of smartphones will be raised towards her, in a never ending stream of people on visiting times of the Louvre. Apparently 80% of the visitors of the Louvre come to see her.
I read in an article that at present people seek personal attention in combination with important objects and/or moments. A selfie is the instrument to gain that attention on Instagram or Twitter or Facebook or Tiktok. Mona Lisa/Lisa Gherardini never wanted that attention, a brilliant artist painted her portrait. And the rest is history. She must feel lonely now, no one is coming to see her. Or is she finally getting her well deserved rest.

Le Mont Saint Michel is an old village on a rock in a bay on the west of France in Brittany. It is positioned in between Normandy and Brittany, and is famous for its abbey.

La Défense (Blocs)
The theme for this week Lens-artists challenge #157 is ‘getting away’.
La Défense is a big, modern office area in Paris. I remember my teacher for French saying she did not like it at all, too modern, on the old axe of the Champs Elysées and Louvre. Years later I was curious about the area and went there on a long weekend trip, hoping for some nice images. Feeling small between the buildings of big companies, rising high up over the skyline of Paris. An alienating place, where human size did not seem to matter.

Power
The theme for Lens-artists Weekly Photo Challenge #118 is ‘Communication’.
Architecture can be used to communicate wealth or power. An example in the history of The Netherlands are the canal houses in Amsterdam. A more modern ‘show off’ of wealth is the ING House on the A10 in Amsterdam. A rather small Head Office on a very expensive piece of land. And building high risings is another example where (not only) Dutch cities build literally their image and show off economic power. This is Delftse Poort, til 2009 the highest building in The Netherlands. The five highest buildings in The Netherlands are all in Rotterdam (this is the ranking).

Just behind the roof of Central Station is Delftse Poort. Until 2009 the highest building in The Netherlands. The five highest buildings in The Netherlands are all in Rotterdam.

Tower
The theme for Lens-artists Weekly Photo Challenge #114 is ‘Negative Space’.
The term ‘negative space’ to me is confusion: technically it is the space around the main subject of a photo. It means ‘negative’ as opposed to ‘positive’ attention for the main subject. The word ‘negative’ as a noun brings back good old memories. Being older I actually worked and work with negatives (for the millennials: it has to do with film, the light sensitive stuff we used to put in a camera to get a photo on (in negative) that later could be printed (in positive).
So ‘negative space’ is about the focus a viewer of a photo is offered in a photo. If there is a lot to see around the subject, than that distracts from that subject. In other words: it is a creative tool a photographer can use.

Paris 1989
The theme for Lens-artists Weekly Photo Challenge #112 is ‘Pick a Word… ’.
In 1989 the Notre Dame de Paris was dominating the view of the Isle de France. Let us hope that after the fire she will come back untangled in its old splendor, resting comfortable between the two arms of the Seine.
