Weekly Photo Challenge | What's (in) the Picture?

Little Chapel – Naxos 1983

This week LAPC #254 is ‘spiritual places’; I use an old photo that I also published in October 2021 of a little chapel in Naxos that could do with some tender loving care for lens artistists challenge #168: seen better days. I edited it with a lighter atmosphere and took out the most obvious dust and scratches this time, so if you want to compare, here is that post.

About the B4 retouch series:
I browsed my archive for pictures to publish. Some of them are partly retouched but still, like most of the archive, do have scratches, dust and stains.

The picture was originally shot with Pentax K1000 on Kodak Plusx, scanned from negative and tweaked using Snapseed and Marksta. Click the picture for a larger version.

Hospital

The Lens Artists Photo Challenge #251 is ‘buildings and other structures’. This the Alrijne Hospital in Leiden. The wings form a beautiful shape with some organic trees and green under a contrasting sky.

Sunset

Lens Artist Photo Challenge #250 (hurray) is ‘Cloudscapes or Skyscapes’.

Living in a land flat as a pancake, makes one used to see a low horizon and lots of sky. Hence we do not pay too much attention to it probably, if it’s blue it’s fine, if it’s grey there is a lot of grey. The only exception are sunrises and sunsets. They can be majestic.

Flower Fields

At this time of Spring the bulbfields deliver their richness and beauty in rows of flowers, stretching over the land like post stamps. Living in this area of The Netherlands for a long time, this is quite a ‘normal’ event. I try to remember the first time I saw it as a child, being amazed by the perfume and splendour of the fields, just to keep me appreciating it as it should.

A month ago we had a partial public space power cut, the streetlights of a part of the neigbourhood were off for an hour and the moon showed its grace beautifully. Power inside the houses was still there. Power cuts are fortunately rare, and this one was quite a nice experience! This is a bicycle coming by.

Off Beach: A Question

This week’s Lens Artists Photo Challenge 240 is hosted by John Steiner. He invites to show my favorite type or style of photography as the road I have chosen to take most often. And that creates a bit of a problem for me. I need direction.

Basically my attention gets caught and produces an image. It is not conscious, it is in the context where I am. And it results in an array of subjects. It is easier to say what road I do not take: fashion, portraits, urban. But travel, cities, landscapes etc are part of the portfolio. Maybe I can not choose to continue in a specific direction?

I think I have to ask the visitors of this blog to give an answer to John’s question, for I can’t for myself. What do you think? Is there a red line in my snaps? Or is it a mixed bag of pieces? I appreciate your feedback.

Morning Flight 3

At sunrise on the marshes at Blakeney. The weekly theme for LAPC #237 is ‘bringing softness’. I pulled the camera following a flight, coming in towards the rising sun, and here coming into the light.

Right now the coast at Katwijk is work in progress. Sand is dredged out of the sea, pressed through tubes and added just before the beach under the water. 5,5 cubic meters of sand. Making it safe again and compliant to standards. As always Rijkswaterstaat does an amazing job.

Suppletion of 5,5 million cubic meters of sand – Coastal defense maintenance

The weekly theme for LAPC #237 is ‘bringing softness’. Softness can be achieved in processing a sharp photo. Or just use zoom on an iPhone and do not keep it still while pressing the shutter. It gives the softness that makes this beach view interesting.
