This week’s Lens Artists Photo Challenge is #206 ‘Treasures’. Life deserves to be treasured as it rolls out with us on our journey through our years. Lots of change happens during that trip. One of The Netherlands most wonderful features is the low horizon. Meaning we have so much sky, as a giant canvas to show clouds and patterns. The flat horizon does not attract too much attention, just offers some texture to the straight line. Showing the changes over the years as urbanization and commercial estates grow.

The Lens-artists challenge #197 is ‘rule of thirds’. The rule of thirds is a rule of thumb how to compose images. But a photo that creates a journey of the eye can also be made by using lines and colors. Even when the horizon is not on 1/3.

The Lens Artists Photo Challenge#144 for this week is ‘taking flight’. The flying objects in this photo are the clouds, chasing on the frisky Northern wind this morning. Covering the familiar display of rows of hyacinths in full bloom.

Normally the bulb fields attract tourists in the Spring. The colours are always fantastic to see. Let alone the smell. In The Netherlands we are in an intelligent lockdown since March 12th. To prevent people from flocking into the bulb fields the growers decided to chop the heads sooner than normal. After all the bulbs that are on the field are meant to be sold, you can order them online from August. The flowers are taking too much strength out of the bulbs, that is why they are chopped off after flowering. Last weekend we spotted two fields still in bloom, and decided to have a closer look on a bicycle ride. This is what we found.

The weekly theme is ‘place in the world’. Where do you belong?
Images of the place I live, my place(s) in the world. One is a bit hard to grasp: music. ‘Place in the world’ brought me immediately to In My Place by Coldplay. Can this song be about flowers?
Last month, exploring the flower fields with tulips near my village (place), I came across this setting. Taking this photo, the power lines and the lonely house set the atmosphere; the flowers are almost gone, some are still there. Flowers come and go, and you have to wait another year for them, but singing flowers? Well, it checks boxes, but not all of them. Perhaps I cross lines I should not cross? Do enjoy the song and the photo.

In My Place – Coldplay
In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn’t change
I was lost
I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn’t have crossed
I was lost
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
I was scared, I was scared
Tired and under prepared
But I wait for it
If you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
Then I’ll wait for you (yeah)
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Sing it, please, please, please
Come back and sing to me, to me, me
Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out, to me, me
Come back and sing it
In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn’t change
And I was lost
Songwriters: Martin / Berryman / Buckland / Champion

This old wind mill from 1783 has its own story. Its name, ‘De Hoop Doet Leven’, is a Dutch saying: meaning hope brings or gives life. Till 1999 the mill was part of the water management of a polder near Rijnsburg. It was too close to the new build of flower auction Royal Flora Holland, and the auction paid for its removal to this new spot. It is still working as a museum to the public.

The weekly theme is ‘wanderlust’.
The word comes from German, meaning a desire to wander. Wandering can start close to the house, and may not immediately involve country borders. And a perfect means of transportation is a bicycle.
