Slane Hill in Ireland. Close to Slane Castle castle that is famous among other historical facts, for being the recording site for U2’s The unforgettable fire’ in 1984.
Never judge an album by its cover, but part of the castle burned in 1991, but was restored in 2001. Slane Castle is also famous for its concerts and festivals; a lot of famous band and artists performed there.

Outside the village is The Hill of Slane with a small old ruined chapel, a ruined monastery and a graveyard, overlooking the landscape and the river Boyne.

Each time we travel from or to the UK by Eurotunnel, this site next to the motorway draws my attention. A wood of pylons emerges, displaying big power lines in the air.
It is like an army that comes out of the soil. Luckily my wife does most of the driving, so I have my hands free to snap about when we pass this point.

Fireworks

Traditionally in The Netherlands the new year starts with private fireworks (this year people spent 77 million euro). Over the years this party has turned from pleasure over to  concern. There is an increasing flow of illegal fireworks (like avalanche bombs), more damage to public and private goods, and increasing aggression towards services. And on top of that an increase in injuries and at times loss of life. The public and political debate at the moment is about a ban of private fireworks. One alternative could be to replace them by formal local firework events and/or a big national event..

The burst function on an iPhone works well shooting this ‘popping’ scenes. However, the quality and control of light is less than with a system camera or dslr.

Berlin Wall 30 years ago

On November 9 1989 the Berlin Wall opened. A few days later I happened to be in Berlin for a short holiday. The Wall was open. There was a an opening in the  Potsdamer Platz. A long row of people was waiting in the big empty space. On the east side the atmosphere was still spooky and depressing. The Wall had opened, but the  infrastructure that kept East-Germans inside was still there. The guards, the towers, the barb wire, the mines, the ‘no man’s land zone’, the spooky and unrealistic atmosphere of separation and repression. On the west side spirits were high; people were attacking The Wall to get memorabilia, tearing it down with hammers and chisels. There was the anticipation of change, everybody (including the press at the Brandenburger Tor) was waiting for The Big Opening. It was the principal press area for reporting from Berlin in those days. People selling t-shirts, buttons. Here an album of pictures of these days. Some I published earlier some are new.  I will never forget how it felt to walk through East-Berlin which was still in its old state. In a way I am happy I did that, before it all disappeared. I am looking forward to a long weekend in Berlin to visit these places again and going to one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
