2nd Balcony Scene, but it’s not Shakespeare

LAPC 309 is about balconies. I have to admit that I do not pay special attention to balconies, unless they trigger me as I look around and they catch my eye. This in Rethymnon on Crete. My first entry was an original monochrome on film. With this one I could not decide between the original and the edited monochrome version. Hence you see them both. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

1979 Steps (about 600)

Greece, Fira/Santorini – July 1979

This week LAPC #260 is ‘overlooked’. Again one from the archives, the then small town of Fira, on the island Thira aka Santorini, built on the edge of a former caldera. The old harbor is deep down, and 600 steps lead you up to the town balancing on the edge of the caldera. Donkeys are used for comfort against payment. Since 1979 tourism boomed extremely on this beautiful island. I feel fortunate to have visited it before that tourist flood. But each time I see photos of this place I long to go back. The beaches are perfect: volcanic ashes that does not stick like sand.

About the B4 retouch series:
I browsed my archive for pictures to publish. Some of them are partly retouched but most do have scratches, dust and stains.

The picture was originally shot with Pentax K1000 on Kodak Plusx, scanned from negative and tweaked using Snapseed and Marksta. Click the picture for a larger version.

Fira 1979

Greece, Santorini/Thira – July 1979

This week LAPC #259 is ‘unbound’. Again one from the archives, that I published earlier for LAPC. #164. I feel fortunate to have visited it before that tourist flood. But each time I see photos of this place I long to go back. The beaches are perfect: volcanic ashes that does not stick like sand.

Little Chapel – Naxos 1983

Greece, Naxos – July 1983

This week LAPC #254 is ‘spiritual places’; I use an old photo that I also published in October 2021 of a little chapel in Naxos that could do with some tender loving care for lens artistists challenge #168: seen better days. I edited it with a lighter atmosphere and took out the most obvious dust and scratches this time, so if you want to compare, here is that post.

About the B4 retouch series:
I browsed my archive for pictures to publish. Some of them are partly retouched but still, like most of the archive, do have scratches, dust and stains.

Naxos Sunrise

Greece, Naxos – July 1983

The Greek islands have sometimes that magical light at sunrise and sunsets, that create layers of grey tones, fading in the distance. This week’s theme for the Lens Artists Photo Challenge #184 is ‘Travel has taught me’.

Lost in translation

Greece, Naxos – July 1983

Reading about the theme this week, I instantly had to think of this sign on a beach in Naxos Greece in July 1983. Sometimes things go wrong in a funny way, trying to communicate from a native language to English. This week’s theme for the Lens Artists Photo Challenge #184 is ‘Travel has taught me’.

Wall

Greece, Lesbos – July 2007

The weekly LAPC (Lens Artists Photo Challenge) #183 is ‘memorable events’. One of the ‘themes’ I always look for is ‘windows’; all kinds of windows, showing different styles of houses, culture and local weather.

Sunset

Greece, Lesbos – July 2007

Achilles and the tortoise

Greece, Lesbos – July 2007

The weekly LAPC (Lens Artists Photo Challenge) #182 is ‘interesting objects’. Zeno of Elea is famous for a set of paradoxes. One of them is the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise.

In the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise, Achilles is in a footrace with the tortoise. Achilles allows the tortoise a head start of 100 meters, for example. Suppose that each racer starts running at some constant speed, one faster than the other. After some finite time, Achilles will have run 100 meters, bringing him to the tortoise’s starting point. During this time, the tortoise has run a much shorter distance, say 2 meters. It will then take Achilles some further time to run that distance, by which time the tortoise will have advanced farther; and then more time still to reach this third point, while the tortoise moves ahead. Thus, whenever Achilles arrives somewhere the tortoise has been, he still has some distance to go before he can even reach the tortoise.

No One is an Island

Greece, Lesbos – July 2007

Off the west coast of Lesbos.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee. John Donne

My First WordPress Photo Publication

Greece, Lesbos Skala Sikemenias – July 2007

January 2008 I joined WordPress. This is the first photo I published on WordPress. A taverna in a hamlet in Greece. Quite obvious what struck me in this picture: all men, all apparently in thoughts. What is going on?

Samos 1983

Greece, Samos – July 1983

The theme for Lens-artists Weekly Photo Challenge #158 is ‘Along back country roads’.

The airport of Samos is just near a beach. Luckily there were about two flights a day. The backroads of the Greek islands are the ferry services between them.
