Elgin Marbles

England, London – September 2004

These sculpture (nicknamed The Elgin Marbles) are originally from the Parthenon in Athens. Lord Elgin supposedly bought them from the Ottomans, who occupied the present Greece at that moment. The Greek try to return these marbles for decades, the UK government refuses, saying it’s British heritage. Last week a meeting of the UK prime minister with the prime minister of Greece was cancelled, after the Greek PM reiterated the ownership of the marbles. How mesmerizing and wonderful must it be to see these ornaments in the place they belong, on top of the Acropolis over Athens.

Rain and Shine

A Magnolia tree. Autumn is a time of rapid changes. It can be light and sunny with wonderful colors on display, or grim and dim in rain. Both have its unique beauty in my humble opinion.

Lens Artists Photo Challenge #275 is ‘filling the frame’. Each photo fills a frame of course, but this is about focussing a subject, and eliminate distraction.

Canal Parade Pride Leiden

The Netherlands, Leiden – September 2023

Lens Artists Photo Challenge #266 is ‘Time’. It takes a lot of time to tell everything about the concept of time. One aspect of time is change. In time society changes in most cases. These changes can be political (eg equal voting rights), economical (eg equal pay for men and women) or social (eg inclusion). But of course there are more emancipatory changes possible and needed.

Orchids

The Netherlands, Oegstgeest – August 2023

This week’s Lens Artists Photo Challenge #265 is ‘Black and White or Monochrome’. I love working in non color. I am not interested if it is black and white and grey tones or a one color/tone photo.

So here a photo that might be black and white and monochrome.

I developed my skill to identify a good monochrome or black and white photo when I still used film. Translating colors into grey tones is important. If you do not ‘see’ it immediately then see if your camera or phone has a black and white setting. Contrary to an old analogue camera your tests are free and you can see the result immediately. I prefer to shoot in black and white , not in color. Either by using the ‘mono’ setting of my iPhone, or an app like Blackie or Lenka.

Faces of Yemen 1998

Yemen, Jibla – April 1998

25 years ago I was fortunate to visit Yemen. For this week’s Lens Artists Photo Challenge #263 ‘A face in the crowd’ I will publish some street portraits of that trip. Looking back at old photos can raise questions: what happened to them in those 25 years? Especially now this beautiful country is suffering from a terrible war.

1979 Steps (about 600)

Greece, Fira/Santorini – July 1979

This week LAPC #260 is ‘overlooked’. Again one from the archives, the then small town of Fira, on the island Thira aka Santorini, built on the edge of a former caldera. The old harbor is deep down, and 600 steps lead you up to the town balancing on the edge of the caldera. Donkeys are used for comfort against payment. Since 1979 tourism boomed extremely on this beautiful island. I feel fortunate to have visited it before that tourist flood. But each time I see photos of this place I long to go back. The beaches are perfect: volcanic ashes that does not stick like sand.
